Ideas that are so easy!
Buy and use reusable grocery bags
Use reusable containers instead of single use plastic bags
Get a trash bin for different recyclables (cans / paper / glass etc...)
Donate instead of throwing it away (someone can use it)
Fix something old and make something new
Use both sides of paper
Take Action!
The best way to eliminate the avalanche of plastic bags that are taking over our environment is through source reduction. Reusing and reducing are great ways to this issue. Another way is to change the way we package. There are very easy ways to be more responsible.
* Use your own reusable bags at the grocery store, retail stores, drugstore, clothing store and anywhere else that you may need a tote to help out with. One family of 4 can eliminate 2000 single use grocery bags. (Only 0.6% get recycled, some kill animals, some litter the land and the others spend up to 1000 years in the landfill) 2000 single use grocery bags require 21 gallons of oil to produce.
* When you spring clean set aside anything that can be re-used, recycled or donated. Sometimes we forget what we have and can be fun to use or donate our old purchases. There are businesses that will actually pay you for your oldies but goodies (baby items, books , cd's, clothes, bikes and so on).
* Use the opportunity to teach your kiddos. We are all very accustomed to disposable goods. I point out items in the stores that are made from recycled goods (ex. plastic "wood" planks for building porches) to my kids. I think its good to know that recycled items actually go somewhere. We have a monthly trip to the book trading store, we get new books and my boys know to keep them in good condition or they will not get the same amount of money for return. We also turn the water off completely while brushing our teeth. We measured how much water runs while we are busy brushing, sit down this will shock you! My boys brush for 60 seconds and with the water running it wastes just under a gallon of water. With two boys that is 1,424 gallons of water per year.
* For the last 4 weeks we have rode our bikes out for ice cream instead of using the car. We always go for a treat at least once a week, now we use manpower instead of our car. One person using a bike instead of a car for 1/2 hour per week is not much, but if 1% of the population did it we would make a serious mark. If I attribute one penny to represent the cost of having a car on the road for a half hour, we would save 33.8 million dollars per year. |
